Help Me ID Super Cool Bird Logo Reel

Post by Teal »

Thanks to a heads up from eagle-eye Don Champion, I was able to pick up this little beauty for a song. It's equivalent to a 40-yard model but is not marked on the bottom of the foot. Has neat filigree around the edges of the front and back plate, and a gentle s-handle with bone grasp (alas it is chipped). Click button on the back side. Five screws attach the pillars which are riveted on the back side. Most interesting to me, however, is the bird with fish in its mouth logo. I would guess this reel dates to 1900 give or take a decade either way, but I am unfamiliar with the logo. Anyone seen it before? Guesstimates on the make? It's really well made and a nifty addition to my small reel collection. See pics and put up your best guess!

Guesstimates on the make?
Pflueger
Logo probably supposed to be an osprey. Possible starting point for research: In 1909, Hartung Bros. (Jersey City, NJ)) had a trademark-infringement dispute with U.S. Net & Twine (which was defunct by that time). Both companies used osprey logos.

Thanks Steve! I did not know U.S. Net used the osprey logo. I think that is the best guess, as the hartung logo is later and used on trolling lures:

So I imagine that U.S. Net would be the answer!

Here's another Hartung ad from 1909 and a pre-Fish Hawk ad from 1908.

Todd, isn't that a Pflueger pfoot on your reel? Although USN&T used some kind of osprey logo, I don't know if the Hartung-USN&T dispute involved it.

The foot differs from the Pflueger feet I have seen in that it is not connected in the center of the foot by a bar. I disassembled the reel which is really well made and took these photos; 2nd to last pic is a standard Pflueger foot for comparison. Final pic is the moog patent which it definitely resembles ... but not exactly.

Oops! Todd, posted the Moog patent on the other thread before seeing your update. The Moog foot is different; it's made by cutting 4 slits in a strip of metal and forming channels for the bottom pillars by corrugating the metal on the sides of the slits. There are no "tabs" on the sides. But maybe it's not a Pfoot either. :bash:
Here's a much better description of how the Moog foot was made, written as only a lawyer can write:

I've had this logo in my file for some time now. It shows up on a skeleton reel with the
stamping "POIDS PLUM" on the frame of the reel. The logo of the fish hawk is alongside.
Maybe Richard Lodge can help on this one.

This one is close to your reel, but has a different handle screw and foot.

Could someone possibly put together a pictorial post of reel feet that we could sticky as reference? Just so my weak mind doesn't have to relearn the differences every time one of these posts shows up??!

I hadn't thought it was foreign, but I recall Henry Wilkes used the Osprey logo. Will have to check that out.

I don't think its Wilkes. Here's the Osprey logo from Wilkes, and it's different than the one on the reel.

Poids Plume is French for "Featherweight" which might help us to ID this as a French reel.

Thanks Ed,
one down and only 15 more to ID. Lots of bird, dog, and fish logos still need to be discovered,

Dustnstuff,

Maybe you can start a thread and post unknown trademarks, I am sure between the bulk of us we could crack some of them.

About 15 years ago Craig Barber did some research on Trade Marks and I put it together in a sample searchable CD. I demonstrated it at an ORCA Convention, but no one seemed interested and the project died. Then I added it to the Reel Research website sample I had constructed. It was searchable by logo, name, owner, etc. Last year I sent Craig's material (many hundreds of TMs were copied from the US Govt) to someone in ORCA (Jim Madden?) that was going to put it all up on the Reel Research website. Completion of this project would be a great asset to ORCA members.

Todd: Check pages 106-109 The History of the Pflueger Summit Fishing Reel (I bet you have a copy!) re: the name Osprey.

Geezer, i fear that all ended up in materials from the Stu Lawson estate, although perhaps it was a copy of what you also had from Craig. Unfortunately, there was no searchable CD and wading through the pile of xerox copies is a bit laborious. If that CD still exists, perhaps it could still be made available for future research. I don't have the stomach for digitizing it all, especially if it has already been done.
