Need Help On Value of NIB Yale Surf Winder ...

Post by reelsmith. »

I've seen a few of these over the years, but haven't paid attention to what they sell for. I found this one yesterday. It was a fun pick. The folks had a shed filled with large Rubbermaid totes chock full of tackle. After sorting through it all for three hours, getting absolutely filthy dirty (I love the smell of old tackle in the morning !), negotiating for another hour, putting half of what I wanted to buy back, I then made off with a bin full of goodies.

The thrill is in the hunt !

Thanks for the help.

If no idea of value, is it safe to say it is scarce ?

Thanks.

Dean, you bring back memories. I have that exact set right in front of me, with box and paper. I believe Doc Herr found a stash of them back in the mid 90's. I paid Doc $15 for it at the Allentown show in 1997. Years later I took it to a few shows and put a $45 price on it and it didn't sell. But who knows what they are worth today.

From someone who's landlocked in practically the exact center of the US and can't imagine trying to actually fish with a non-level wind reel, does that doohicky contraption fasten in front of the reel with the line then threaded through, and riding in the wheel groove, to make a non-level wind a level wind? :loco: If so, that was a bulky, yet cool, idea. :cool If not, could you guys tell us novices its purpose? :)

I suspect if it is made for surf and saltwater rods, bulk wouldn't be that much of an issue. Neat gadget, though.

I've had three of these over the years in the box, one in a box like yours and two in a yellow picture box. I traded all of them. One of the guys I traded with said he sold his for $40 to another collector. This was a few years ago. It was the yellow box version (later).

Dean - For what it is worth I bought one of these Yale surf winders from Andy Foster a few years back to go in my Yale Metal Disc Surf Reel Display & I paid $70. I don't have the box but it would be nice to have one in my display since it shows on the box what the little gadget is for. Bill

A gazillion of the Surf Winders, MIB, came out of storage when Pequea was liquidated, back whenever. I don't know where they all went, but Doc Herr had a heap of them. I bought a couple @ $10 each, and that was pretty much the going price for a long time. They show up on ebay regularly these days, more often with the box than without. Mine are a couple of the very few items that may actually be worth more than what I paid for them.

One just sold on e-bay last week for 20 dollars and around 2 bux shipping but the box and paperwork were not the quality yours is plus it had an extra digit in the serial number making yours more valuable in my op .
I would say it's worth at least 2-3 times the one on e-bay .
Very Neat Gadget and looks a lot like my old mechanical Apple Peeler but when I use that for line leveling it cuts the line to shreds.
