Is "Bass King" a known trade name?

Post by Len Sawisch »

I am mentoring a young man who came across a "Bass King" bamboo casting rod and hasn't been able to find any info on line. Is Bass King familiar to anyone?

Yes. I believe he was already told that his rod was likely made by Montague Rod & Reel Co. for Western Auto Stores. The rod I saw had a model number on it as well, starting with a "V" and was scripted on the rod shaft next to "Bass King". I didn't save the photos, but the model number was one used by Western Auto. That's if it's the same rod that was shown me just yesterday.

Thanks! The little dickens apparently took my original advice to check Reel Talk and Joe's when a simple Google search didn't help, but didn't mention he already tried before he contacted me today!

I did search here before I posted and didn't get a hit on Bass King. Mark, how were you contacted?

Hey Len,
Found the photos, as I remembered he sent them through eBay's messaging. The Model number was #V524. The guy's name is Larry. He often emails me for rod identifications. Maybe he didn't like my ID this time?

Apparently Larry sold the rod last night to my young friend and his Dad, telling them he had it on his wall forever and had not intended to sell it. Did you estimate a value?

Len,
He didn't ask for a value. I usually don't give one anyway.

Cool. By the way, my wife saw Wrong99 and asked if that was me. I said "No, why?" She said "because you are wrong 99% of the time . . ."

Yep, I'm married, too, so I've heard that a few times. Should have seen that coming when I created it. But no, I thought, let's create something really "catchy"...

Len,

There are seven US Trademarks that begin with "Bass" but Bass King isn't one of them. As you and Mark discussed, it is a trade name.

Only 99%, huh?
