Golden West and Re-Treev-It

Post by VintageGeorge »

Greetings from Houston,
My wife is an estate and yard sale nut. She knows I love old Mitchell reels and actually fish them, so she comes home with a box with 8 different reels, only one being a very tired old Mitchell 300. I'm thinking she made a good score for $20.00 bucks ! The interesting reels are a Pflueger Golden West stamped 4048(s/n ?) and a Re-Treev-It . They are very dirty but seem to be functioning.
I will try to figure out how to post pictures later this evening.
Thanks for looking and any comments are appreciated,
george

I think the Golden West could be worth 10X what she paid, depending on condition. Just look up sold prices on eBay

Hmmm, I got interested in this, went to eBay to look at sold listings and the only Pflueger Golden West reels sold recently enough to be included are surf/casting reels; there are current BIN listings for many times what was paid for the two, but nothing listed as sold recently....

Actually, two sold today at the Lang's auction for $275 and $300. A little more than I expected but thats how these things go. Spectacular find though. I'm very jealous!

Just before I responded above, I saw a sold listing on eBay.com for $250 but strangely that has since disappeared. A couple are listed for sale now at relatively high prices. I stand by my 10X remark. Condition will make a difference although dirty does not reduce value of a good reel like that IMHO.

Nice find and great teamwork! Yes, Paul is right about the Golden West. There were two reels made by Pflueger that had the same name, as you may have already learned, but the fly reel version like yours is definitely much more valuable. It doesn't look cracked or damaged in any significant way and if it were cleaned up, you would probably have no difficulty getting the estimated figure. The prices are a little down compared to pre-2008 prices but I can't see them staying there much longer.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?
