Homecoming

Post by Steve »

Most of us old-timers can bore you with stories about how many families of reel makers and inventors we've badgered for information on "Grandpa" and his reels. If we learned that the family still owned any of them, we would increase the badgering until we could buy goodies from the family or the door was slammed shut.

I'm happy to report that things sometimes go the other way. Recently, I was contacted by a friend of the husband of a granddaughter of an inventor I wrote about in 2009. The husband wanted to find an example of grandpa's reel to give as an anniversary present. So off went my reel (and a copy of the article), back to the family of the inventor, where it can be welcomed home. I hope granddaughter is as delighted with the reel as her husband was.

Dear Head-sized-reel Guru,
There's not much to "the rest of the story," except to identify the reel. It's a Taffy Reel, an unusual non-fixed-spool reel that looks like a spinning reel. It's operated through a friction clutch controlled by a thumb lever, as shown in the 1953 patent. This photo shows the male(M) and female components of the frusto-conical clutch. The thingee at the top is a line guide.

Hope this helps,
Dud

Nice call, Steve! It's really rewarding when our efforts inform the family as well as reel collectors. Often, we can tell them much more about their relatives' reel making than anyone left in the family knows!

Ahhhh,

The old Taffy reel, thank you Mr. Pie for filling in the blanks. When perusing Ben's Wright Guide For The Reel Man my eyes always stopped at that reel, it is a reely cool oddball reel. Keep up the good work my friend and you can rest assured that I have added another gold star next to your name in my book.

Yours admiringly,

Big headed reel Guru guy

As you know, Restoration Guru, it goes both ways. Many years ago, a great-granddaughter of B.F. Meek provided Frank Stewart and me with a lot of info for our Ky. reel book. She knew all about the reel making, family history, etc. I was privileged to be able to help find her son a Meek reel, which the family had been seeking for years.

Funny how we had met each other. The owner of a local Orvis store and I were chatting when she phoned him with a question about an old something or other. He put me on the phone and Bingo! Talk about luck!
I have added another gold star

Steve(Dudley):

Is that an example of "paying it forward" or "paying it backward"? Either way, nice job.
