Reel Makers by State

Post by OCauto »

Rick and I have been adding content to the Reel Makers by State site. We have drawn blanks in some states and may be missing some in the populated states. We would like your help in filling the gaps. Click the link below and it will take you to the states list.

Ulrich Manufacturing Co. of Centerville, Calif. (now called Fremont, CA). Makers of the UCO Steelhead Spin-Fly reel. Patent #2,649,259 (1953). UCO is listed in the Reel Makers section, although it's blank, with no description. I believe they only made this one model, as I've never seen another.

I didn't review the entire list. Not sure if you checked out this thread but there's a lot of information in it.

Air Light Products, now Air Light Plastics, Omaha, Nebraska, made a plastic sidemount spincast reel in the mid '50s. You can see a couple of examples, green & red, here.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

I might have to throw something together down in my garage shop to get WV on the list. Our new governor just got elected with the motto: Aren't you tired of being 50th?

You can add the following to Indiana:

D+T Spider Fort Wayne
OK Machine Fort Wayne
Goite Kokomo
Boyer Winona Lake
J Rider Fort Wayne
S.L Kuntz Fort Wayne
Fries Fort Wayne
Benson Kokomo
Bite-em Warsaw
Easy Cast Kendallville
Rinebolt Huntington
Blee Fort Wayne
Creek Chub Garrett

Also you have Alumag of Fort Wayne Misspelled

I will have to check as I think I have a couple more on my list but it is not handy right now.

These are all Indiana style reels and I realize that most reel collectors have no interest in them as a collectable and they are not included in most references to old reels, but they are still reels.
I am looking for any Indiana style reels that I don't already have in my collection. I have all kinds of reels and lures and some cash to trade for the ones I need.

Idaho does have a reel maker. I wrote an article for the Reel News about the "Snoflake" sidecast reel. It is in the July 2004 issue on page 10. If you don't have that issue available Al, the reel was manufactured by Vern Johnson of Shelly, Idaho. It is an "Indiana style" reel similar to the Go-Ite. Company history, etc. can be found in the article.

Some corrections for CALIFORNIA -

- B&M was a retailer who sold Klein reels that were marked B&M. They did not make any reels.

- Klein was Santa Monica

- Kovalovsky was Hollywood

FLORIDA -

- Bingham - Miami

- Murbert Mfg. Corp - Hialeah

- Knowles Tuna Reel - Elwin Lloyd Knowles - Miami

- Southern Tackle bought Fin-Nor so......... are they a new manufacturer? They also sold other peoples reels.

NEW YORK

- Hoesel was Long Island New York

NEW JERSEY - update

- Schauffler was Ralph Kohlhepp and later Kimsey

- Joseph Martina - Hillside NJ

SOUTH CAROLINA update

- Reel King was Greer South Carolina

I hope this helps.

Thanks to all of you that have responded. I just finish adding and or fixing per all the good feedback I have received so far. You might want to re-check and confirm. I added the remarks in the far right column. If you have any dates (start, finish, etc.) please send them also.

Al,
I assume you mean the state that they were physically manufactured in, rather than where the company was headquartered? Montague City Rod Co. comes to mind, who had their headquarters in Mass., but built the reels in Brooklyn.

Al, What am I missing? Has the USA changed that much over night. You say 38 states have known reel makers in them and 22 do not. That totals 60 and I thought there were only 50 stars on our flag. Otherwise great work on your part and a big THANKS for your efforts.

Mark is correct, and there is one other note worthy addition; the Orvis 1874 patent reel.
The reel was in fact made in New York, by the Manhattan Brass and Manufacturing Company, not in Vermont, though Orvis certainly sold them in Vermont. Even the much later CFO reels were made for Orvis by other companies, such as Hardy, STH and even Stan Bogdan.

I'd add another to the Massachusetts list - Bickford & Carrier, Inc out of Greenfield made the Cormorant reel.

...and speaking of Stan (and son Steve) Bogdan, you can add his name to the New Hampshire reel makers.
