FRR Trademark Pages Update
Thanks to Alan Baracco and Colby Sorrells I have been able to extract the USPTO registered trademarks for fishing reels from their extensive fishing tackle trademark database and posted lists on the FRR site. The tables are sorted in several ways. The one I find most interesting is the table showing the trademark symbols, sorted by trademark owner name. Seeing the Enterprise, Bronson (& Higbie) and Langley reel related trademarks clustered together in consecutive rows, for example, is very interesting to me.
Lists are posted under this menu:
http://www.fishingreelresearch.org/trademarks-menu.html
The original FRR trademarks page has been preserved to build upon further. I think a new purpose for that would be to find other trademarks on reels that are not among these USPTO registered marks. One example that intrigues me is the early Shamrock symbol used on Julius Vom Hofe reels. I wonder if that was registered or just claimed to be a trademark? The fun never ends

Plus 1 to that! What you've done with that info makes it very easy to get right to the makers and their repertoire of trademarks, Paul! Thanks to you, Alan and Colby for putting this all together...nice add to the ORCA site!

Re: FRR Trademark Pages Update
Paul,
Great work in synthesizing the reel portion of the USTRADES database Colby and I developed for just this purpose...giving collectors and researchers a tool to increase our collective knowledge of reels and reel makers. This subset of our work to identify all fishing tackle Trademarks registered with USPTO between 1870 and 1960 is only a fraction of the records in the database, over 2,800 in all, lots of lures, rods and so much more, even trademarks to fool even the wariest of fish into being caught, like a trademark for a light that can be lowered over the side of a boat at night.
AND, as you mention, the fun never ends, since knowing which reels have Registered US Trademarks leads to the example you cite of the JVH Shamrock trademark, which I do not believe was ever registered. If Club members know of other reel trademarks that are not included in your FRR pages I would like to know of them.
Again, great job, you can display data in ways that make it "reel". Sorry!
Alan

Re: FRR Trademark Pages Update
Peter, thanks! I'm no trademark expert. I just felt the need to take advantage of the USPTO TM data gathered and offered by Alan and Colby. I do collect antique reels like the one with the flamingo but have not seen that mark before. I put the logo on a certain Facebook Group frequented by European collectors to see if someone else recognizes it. Showing the whole reel design might help lead to a maker/style/region of origin.Dustnstuff wrote:....Maybe you've seen it and can ID it for me.

Re: FRR Trademark Pages Update
I have just added the 5 missing trademark images thanks again to Alan Baracco. One of those was kind of difficult to read so I borrowed part of a picture of an actual mark on a reel that I took from a Nov 2015 Reel Talk post by TEAL.

I'm thinking a Heron on a British or French made reel. Still hopeful

Folks,
Peters bird, I checked the Brits and the Aussies, nothing.
Deke is grateful for Paul's work, I am confident, our USTRADES database tied his computer in knots! Maybe too much time on his part doing the NY Times Crossword puzzle!! Ha! (inside joke)

Re: FRR Trademark Pages Update
Peter: I know you were told on another forum that it isn't Stork Munich but I wouldn't dismiss that possibility. Other than the little eel in the beak they look the same to me. There could be variances in the die or even if just because the impression didn't make full contact or due to wear. What does your full reel look like. Is it this one of these on the left page, by any chance?Dustnstuff wrote:...Got one that has been giving me fits.

Re: FRR Trademark Pages Update
I'm not seeing them being the same image. The "reel" bird has a much larger arc to the neck, the wing is more detailed, the body/wing combo is more round, plus it almost looks like a 3D breast shot with possibly two wings. The catalog bird looks much more skinny in comparison.
At least that's the take from my tired old, but don't need glasses, eyes.
And Paul posted while I was previewing.

Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

Re: FRR Trademark Pages Update
I checked with a long time collector of German reels and he has never seen the logo. The reel style suggests Britain. I found a very neat trademark search tool for the EU but regret that I couldn't find this mark.

Thanks for all the input. The search goes on.
Flamingo? South American retailer?? Florida retailer?? Or maybe Africa.
Definitely not the German Stork.
