Help with Castng Tourny mag articls or photos

Post by colby sorrells »

I'm trying to do some research on casting tournaments reported in outdoor magazines. I have some Sports Afield articles through January 1940 and two Sports Illustrated articles from July 1963 and September 1973. That is all of the articles or photos I have been able to locate. Anyone have other casting tournament articles or photos? Any help is greatly appreciated. Working on a couple of articles for The Reel News.

Colby,

Just trying to clarify the request, are you only looking for original magazine pages from only the sporting magazines? Obviously, the Netherton books reprinted reports from many magazines of the period. Also the NASAC newsletters and Creel publications had the majority of photos. So you just want the original magazine scans?

I have Sporting Gazette from England referencing Spider Line in 1910, anxious to see how you are going to fold that into your talk on casting at the Nationals :-)

Matt,
I have all of the Netherton books and the Osten book (actually a couple of copies). I'm trying to put together a resource list to hand out at the end of my presentation. The outdoors magazines give us a little clue about how popular casting was for any particular year or time frame but were certainly not the only source of information on tournament casting. I'm particularly interested in any photos that show enough detail to determine features of the reels used like was it a regular size spool, narrow spool or spiberweb spool and other features. I would be very interested in a scan on the Spider Line from 1910. News to me! How about sharing?

I really want this to be a discussion and not just someone(me) showing slides.

Thanks for the note Ron.
I'm really interested in magazine articles on tournament casting published between February 1940 and June 1963. Anyone know of any articles on tournament casting published during this time frame? Thanks to all.

Colby,
I know this is barely related to what you're looking for, but I thought it might be of interest seeing as how these two folks were former national casting champions . Picked up this poster, which is likely from the 50's. Under magnification, one of the casting reels is a variety of the Heddon No.P-41 "Pal".

Mark,
Yep, fun stuff. Can you post a closeup of just the reels. Thanks for posting. Colby

This is the best I can do, dealing with an original low-resolution photo and coupled with my ghetto camera.

Colby, you might have better luck searching by casting club names. Here's a list you could start with:
https://books.google.com/books?id=fXEXA ... ub&f=false
Most of their tournaments get reported somewhere.
Another place to start: https://books.google.com/books?id=hHcvA ... ub&f=false
Example of a "find:" https://books.google.com/books?id=1EcZA ... ub&f=false
