I have wanted a 1492 for a while, but have been reluctant to find one because of the right hand wind thing. Can they be converted to wind with the left hand? On some fly reels, one can just flip the ratchet washer over and have at it. I don't know if it works this way on the 1492 or not, but another puzzle for me is the narrow line guard. The longer line guard on some Medalists can be moved to the other side fairly easily, but I don't see a way to do it on the 1492.

Re: 1492 Medalist Question
converting a 1492 is possible, but not easy - you also can't readily move the line guard.
There's a pin that bump-stops the pawl, allowing it only 2 rotation positions out of the 3 possible ends of the triangle.
You have to drive that pin down from the inside, allowing you to reach that 3rd position, then push the pin back up from the outside.
The spring has to be reshaped to get the proper LWH timing (lead) on the pawl.
I recently converted a 1394 click-pawl for Pete.
