Getting ready for the Nationals!

Post by john elder »

Really looking forward to seeing all my ORCA friends and in some cases, meeting best friends I've never met, as usual! It's always a problem trying to figure out what to bring when you are flying from a distance. I have so much I'd like to show off, but not anxious to bring enough to check or risk some of it in the mails. But hopefully, I can round up a little Show and Tell and a few items that someone might have interest in taking home with them!

..and of course, my annual resolution to get out and practice casting has gone by the way as I work to finish projects before leaving. However, it's always good fun, even if I suck :D

Then of course, have to figure out wardrobe to tote along for 1500 miles...is it going to rain? Is the temp going to drop post the storm? From what they say at the desk, it's dropped alot in the last week. Oh well, that's what credit cards and paypal is for..I can always buy clothes from Roger's ORCA store!

You folks withing driving distance should really appreciate the advantage you have and it you are within 300 miles, you are nuts not to come! It's a great show and a fun group to hang with!

Like you, John, I will be winging it. I finally decided what old rods, reels and lures to fish with and managed to pack them into my duffle bag. I look forward to meeting everyone, seeing the displays and fishing with the old stuff. (Do fish get tetanus from rusty old hooks? :D)

John,

Like you I am excited to re-connect with a great group of folks.

If the opportunity presents itself I have a brief presentation on US Trademarks, the highlight of which will be a pairing of ORCA members and the Trademark tatoo that should be displayed for all to see....yours is below, but most must remain secret for now!!

Cheers,

Alan

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

Brian,

Sorry you will not be in Branson, I might as well reveal your ORCA themed Pflueger Tatoo based on your collecting interests!! Any number of shops in Honolulu can get it done, I suspect!!

You are the BOMB for all you do for ORCA!

Cheers,

Alan

Everyone's a comedian! I'm still trying to figure what pre-1940 lures I can bring to stay "legal". Sounds like a lot of spoons with a pork rind or two. Seems unlikely any top water will be happening while we are out there in mid-morning. Well, off to the driveway to see f I can cast my jack Welch levelwind without a backlash. I fear it runs a bit faster than my thumb!

I lost a casting weight thanks to rotten old braid so I went looking to see what other old line I had on reels. This find was interesting. It turns out to be insulated electrical wire!

looks like fly line with a "no knot eyelet" on the end to me
I love to get old reels, work on them until they run as smooth as silk and the take them fishing using pre-1960 plugs, mostly surface fishing for Largemouths after dark.

I've got some of that, green, and brown, sinking and floating. Nice stuff if you keep it out of the sun & elements.
