penn reel boxes

Post by bob121349 »

Hi-when did penn reels stop using the old style picture boxes and start using the more modern ones?

Bob, you'll have to be more specific re what you are calling new vs old. They have changed numerous times. Late years were maroon or tan..
.before that, blue and white with stapled corners. Prior to that, mutlicolored yellow/green with fishing scene. And I believe the earliest was what used to be called the lighthouse box...blue and white, I think. There are several excellent Penn collectors on the board that given a clue or pic, can nail it down for you.

If i understand your question I believe it was around 1959-60 when they switched to the blue white boxes with metal corners. There are a few transitional boxes of that era with the picture front and metal corners.

Yup, the two piece boxes were used from 1933 to 1959. In those years the box color varied from Black to Green (with a few variations)and the stick on box labels varied also. In 1960 Penn moved to a one piece, flip top Blue and white box with the metal corners. They did some experimental boxes in the 1950's which were variations on the flip top boxes of the 60's done in a mix style of 1950's and 60's designs.

Here is what was in this box.

These transition boxes are late in the 1950's decade. I would not think an earlier Gray reel would be found in a box like this. This is a 1959 package.
