Named reels

Post by Steve »

What was the first company to stamp a model name, not just a number, on a reel? (Examples like Talbot "Star," Pflueger "Supreme," etc.) Montague certainly made a habit of naming their reels like household pets, but I doubt they were the first.

I'd guess it has to be Shakespeare - Pflueger didn't name their reels before 1915

Pettengill stamped the model "Mohawk" on his reels in 1885 thru 1887, but long before that, in 1848, Fred Skinner registered his Archimedian Reel

Folks,

Not claiming the first but an early trademarked reel name was by Booth.

First USN&T reel name trademarked was "CLIMAX" in 1894. Actually, they trademarked a figure of a Falcon in 1888, but was it put on a reel?

Kosmic was an A. G. Spalding & Bros. TM from 1890.

Pflueger had several named reels before 1915. They we're marking them shortly after 1900. Examples would be the Akron, buckeye, summit, standard, Victor, peerless and Kentucky. I bet they were far from first though.
I would like any unusual pflueger casting reels!

To add to Robin's comment, they were putting "Tarpon" and "Tuna" on their big saltwater reels around 1905...but then, not sure what one would call an official name for the style

Thomas C. Chubb named his reel “HENSHALL-VAN ANTWERP” circa 1885.

As far as Kentucky makers, Frank Fullilove christened his reel as “Crown” not too long after 1890.

Ooh, I like that one. It raises two more questions:
1. How many reels have been branded "Mohawk" since Pettengill?
2. Was "Archimedian" stamped on the reel, or was that just a descriptive term used because Fred figured the line wound something like this?

(BTW, it could have been worse. Fred could have used the name Quadratwurzelschnecke to describe his reel, but the name wouldn't have fit on anything smaller than a 12/0.)

Folks,

Don't know how this fits with Dr. Todd's post, Silver King was a registered US Trademark for Conroy in 1910.

In 1888, T.J. Conroy went to court to enjoin H.H. Kiffe from selling a "Silver King Reel."
