I am not familiar with this reel maker from a listing on eBay. I frankly can't see the marking or patent info the seller is talking about from the photos but I assume it is there. The dual switches on the back face plate are cool. Is this a British or a US trade reel?
Thanks.

Mike, Steve V has put together a nice site about Hendrick and origins...looks like New Haven...Whiting was a partner:

I'll take liberties with a really beautiful Whiting and Hendrick reel that I just cleaned up for Jim Schottenham. The one in the auction isn't nearly as nice but still a great collectible to add.

Wow, John. Those are the most elaboratedly engraved pillars/posts I have ever seen on a reel. Thanks.

Ha! Yes, I suggested that this one might best enjoy a Left Coast lifestyle, but Jim wasn't buying ...nice add to His collection!

Is it stamped or marked W&H or is it attributed to the company? I can't see a marking, albeit my eyesight isn't what it once was.

Gents, though the reel is beautiful, it's technically not a Whiting & Hendrick Bros. reel. Whiting left the partnership after a year, then Augustus' brother left, leaving A. alone. The "Imperial Mascot" was made sometime between then and when Star Reel Works was established.a really beautiful Whiting and Hendrick reel

Answer anyone? Are these reels stamped or just attributed by characteristics?Mike N wrote:Is it stamped or marked W&H or is it attributed to the company? I can't see a marking, albeit my eyesight isn't what it once was.

Those "pointers" on the back plate are signature Hendrick features on the ebay reel. The one of Jim's that I posted above was ID'd by him (note also Steve has that one featured on his site) and I don't recall seeing any identifying marks.
