I would like to find one before I cut one in half and duct tape the bottom back on a standard size case.
Maybe Shakespeare just packed the bottom of the case with paper to ship a 40yd ?reel?
Do small vintage reel cases for 40yd casting reels exist ?

After 1908 or so, the only models I know of that came in a chamois-lined leather case were the level-winds, and they didn't come in a 40-yard size. A chamois bag was also supplied, which would have taken up some of the space on a smaller size reel. Prior to 1909, only a couple models came with the case. Would you really want to cut one up for a reel that was never originally housed in one? Also, I've been told to never store a reel in these leather cases. Something about chemical reactions? Below is a Style-B in it's original case, with chamois bag instructions on the case cover.

Shakespeare also had some wooden reel boxes. I don't recall seeing anything lately but I haven't been looking. I simply recall Dave Gaustad having one or two. And I have no idea which reels they related to.
Anyone know what the deal was with the Shakespeare wooden boxes?

An old thread that discusses the risks of storing reels in Leather Cases.
