Need photo of a "Hummer" reel

Post by colby sorrells »

Hey Guys,
I need a photo of a hummer reel. These reels had small pieces of lead added to the spool to make it off balance for casting tournaments. The links below discussed these reels further. Anyone have a "hummer" reel that could shoot a few photos?

Thanks for the help.

Bulldog,

What kind of Hummer reel, I have a South Bend (Shakespeare) Hummer from the 1920s.

Surely someone has a hummer reel on hand. Any maker, just need to show the weights added to the spool. How about it? Thanks everyone.

I'm still aghast that someone would intentionally throw the balance off. It would ruin the journals and bushings in no time. Some spools were drilled under the arbor to fine tune the dynamic balance.

I have seen the aftermarket square counterweight that clamp to the reel handle arm. Maybe on a Pflueger or a Shakespeare. Not sure who made them, but they were for casting.

Steve,
You are absolutely correct. It did ruin the bearing very quickly and most of the serious casters didn't like them. Jack Sparks considered them a kind of gimmick, but it was a phase tournament casting went through and is part of the history. I would like to include a photo in my research. Colby

I know this is an older post, and I'll provide a link not to a photo, but to an illustration.

There's a somewhat grainy photo of the "Hummer", as well as the original box, on pages 108 and 109 of "The History Of The Fishing Reel".
