An eBay listing I’ve never seen worthy of some discussion here.
When did Orvis offer a box like this for flies?
Is the reel pictured here a brass reel with the chrome plating worn off?

You can learn more here, but I'd say it's been painted gold at some point.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

I personally saw the reel and it does have a gold wash on it.

You can see two here (scroll down): http://www.tackletreasures.com/boxesMike N wrote:When did Orvis offer a box like this for flies?

The first is earlier.
Note the second box says "makers of fine fishing tackle for over seventy years" ...dating that box at 1926 or later. My guess is the boxes probably started around 1900 or so.

Folks,
This is the only US Trademark for The Orvis Company, you see it was registered in the early 1950s but claims "first use" in 1856.
This trademark is still alive (active) and 106 pages of information is available through the USPTO TSDR online database about the company, including many pages from an early 1950s catalog. Trout cut comes from there.
You can see on the Trademark that Orvis sold "Fishing rod sections and parts". The rod pictured was made by my Dad from a kit he ordered from Orvis, including gluing the hex-cane together, shaping the handle, wrapping the guides, etc. He passed it to me before he passed. You can't read the inscription because he put it in a spiral, but it says "C. L. Baracco 1963 OR 115 Reg. No. 166 8" 4 1/4 oz." Fun stuff!
Merry Christmas to all ORCANS, if you were REALLY good last year maybe Santa will bring you a nice Orvis Battenkill rod and fly reel!!
