Starting a rod hunt!

Post by 1laketrout »

They are out there! In the 40's/50's Hurd made two basic reels--"Caster" and "Super--Caster". Each came with the choice of a "detachable" rod that could be changed to fit a specific need.(See attached!) There were 12 combinations to choose from and the fact that they "detached" caused a lot of permanent separations. Today, almost 80 years later, reels are looking for their rods and mine could use some help! Not many people pay attention to a rod sitting around without a handle--reel-handle combo in this case--and so they sit in a shed, corner, or junk pile--no one knowing what they are for! The "Super" was coated with baked enamel--black---the "Caster" with "Battleship-grey" enamel. Guides varied from 1 to 3--plus a tip. They were of "bridge" design and were attached with red and yellow thread--varnished. Flex was "whippy" to "stiff" in each length as the attached charts show. Please take a look around--talk to your friends and fellow collectors--when traveling to shows, flea-markets, shops, and sales, look for me. They will have a small brass, slotted base that allows them to lock into the reel and set the guides properly. I would appreciate any help and being able to add to the collection.
