ODDBALL SPINNERS
Inspired by Vincenzo and Paul I am going to "come out of the closet", so to speak and fess-up to being a closet spinning reel collector. Can't help it, I have been picking up oddball spinners for many years and I love um' and I don't care who knows!
Vincenze described some of the early spinning reels as "Strange and Beautiful" and I would have to agree. I think I would also like to add one other word to Vincenzo's list of descriptive adjectives and that would be graceful.
As I stated in Paul's post about Vincenzo's reels - I fish with spinning reels and have always been fascinated by them .... so what does a collector do when he is fascinated by something? Yup, you guessed it. Vincenzo and Paul, I hope you don't mind me sharing a few oddballs I have acquired over the years, if you, or anyone else, knows who made any of them or can shed some light on them I would sure appreciate it.
An interesting little Bakelite reel -
Built like a tank -
Primitive yet graceful -
Exposed -
Illingworth like -
Stanley like -
A couple of my "known" favorites -
The Chippindale -
The Augermatic -
The Howban -
Seamaster -

Re: ODDBALL SPINNERS
Ed,
That primitive reel is just too cool!!
And, that "Stanley" like reel may be a Palace Superb - if you have a copy of the book Understanding Threadlines by John Stephenson, check out pages 181-184. I think you'll agree there is a connection there.

I think Jim is on to something, Ed. If you have a copy of Ben's last book, 2011 Edition, take a look at page 492, middle row. Yours is opposite hand crank and missing the writing around the center screw, etc. but it sure looks the same from the knob side.Jim Schottenham wrote:Ed,

That "Primitive but Graceful" third one down reminds me of an egg-beater that was in my mom's kitchen as a youth.

Re: ODDBALL SPINNERS
Jim - I just looked in John's book and I believe you are right. I guess mine had a decal at some point, what a shame it is not there any more. Thank you very much for the help and your expertise!
Tommy - Yup, more confirmation on the Palace Superb - Thank you.
Sid - Yes, this reel could have started its life out as an egg beater in some French kitchen.
Steve - You know what the second baseman said to the shortstop.
