I just looked at a "vintage" combo on my local CL. This comboo has me considering adding my first vintage rod to my collection. The reeel is a Penn 9M w/box and paperwork, lube and wrench. The rod is a 6 foot Montague split bamboo casting rod with cork grips and a metal reel seat. The ad doesn't give any indication that there is a model name or number for the rod. Judging by the cork, I'd say the rod saw very little use. The reel has no line on it and appears to have seen a comparable amount of time in the field so to speak. With this description and no pix, does anyone have an idea of the worth of this outfit?

Buster,
I think you are correct in that the rod looks minty and unused. The reel also looks nice as well. Others can chime in on potential values but I don't think these are heavy hitter items - but I may be way off base due to the apparent pristine condition. If your goal is to have a matching rod/reel from the same period I would try to date both because it is possible the reel might date later than the rod. I'm just not sure when Montague stopped making bamboo rods.

The rod is post-war (1947-1953 or so). The reel I'm not sure. Because of condition, the pair might bring $125-150 at auction, give or take a few. Just my opinion.

It should be easy to date that reel. What No Penn catalog is that?
