It’s interesting also that the screws in Tony’s reel are flat on the end rather than pointed as in the A&I ad...whether that’s intentional or just from wear is less clear, but the rest of the reel lacks that kind of wear.

I'm with Steve ...it's not JVH.

The shoulders on the pillars alone are enough to convince me its not JVH.

I have no idea who made it, but think Slote is worthy of blame.

More data - This pic shows a JVH with an adjustable click. We're getting closer.

Tony - The ad from America Angler does look like your reel but it does not tell us who Abbey & Imbrie got to make it. I am leaning toward Slote because the Slote reels I have or have seen marked Slote & the ones I have that I think are Slote because they have some of the same hallmarks as the marked ones & are all similar to the vom Hofe reels I have or have seen in catalogs. Julius did make this same style reel & I have a catalog page at my home in Virginia that references Julius as the maker. The pillars look Slote & not Julius. Bill Hoerter

The January 17, 1882 patent date in the above A&I ad is a JVH patent.

JVH sold his patent for that feature to Abbey & Imbrie
There were two JVH compensating pivot patents. Half of the first and all of the second were assigned to Imbrie, who could have used, licensed, or sold them in any way he saw fit. And regarding my talk at Lake George, I recall saying nothing more than I thought that some of those adjustable-pivot reels were perhaps not made by JVH. Moreover, JVH's original 1882 pivot patent would have expired by the turn of the century, so anyone could have copied it after that.
a JVH with an adjustable click
And here's another reel with an adjustable click. I doubt it's a JVH.
