Julius Vom Hofe B Ocean 6/0 reel

Post by seareel »

I am in the process of cleaning the reel mentioned above. I want to know the proper and best way to remove the handle. I would appreciate all tips and suggestions.

There is a number 19 stamped on the rings and the side of the foot. Do I assume this reel was made in 1919 ?

What does the B816 stamped on the bottom of the foot represent ?
Thank You very much. Seareel

Seareel,

Can you post a few photos of the reel so we can have a look at it? The way the handle was attached and comes off changed over the life span of the B-Ocean and it would be helpful to see your reel to be able to help you with it.

Thank you,

Ed

Hi, Seareel....your handle should come off by turning the handle counterclockwise...it will unscrew from the shaft. Looks like you need both a grasp and counterweight for you handle. These can be hard to find, as are intact handles, Burt both can be made.

Thank you so much for your help!!!! The handle came off just like you said with no trouble. I had removed the knobs for cleaning. So I have them. I am missing the left side oil cap. Any suggestions? Seareel

Are you just missing the medalion and post or is the whole bearing cover missing? If the latter, that is threaded and screws into a "spider-type" spring that adjusts the tension and influences spool play. If just the medalion and post, you can replace the cover, but finding one labeled for a B Ocean is a tougher search. Post a pic of the pack plate, pls.

Julius's groundbreaking clutch was his best idea of 1911.

I can likely replace it with generic VH but don’t have the B Ocean version of the medallion. If no one comes through with one, then you could just put on a blank one till one showed up. PM me if you wish to pursue.

I enjoyed the walk around 1911 NY more than the reel. Thank you Steve.

So, David, here are a couple possibilities... two slightly different sizes so need measurements on yours to see what might fit best. One has the EVH label but its partly gone now and could easily be removed to leave the medallion blank. The other slightly larger base would need an unmarked medallion added, which i could do. LMK size of your spring and the threaded shaft and we can figure it out. Best solution would be to send me your spring and i can fit on a base that will work. Not a perfect solution but would do till you trip upon a B Ocean bearing cap.
