Perhaps Photobucket is

Post by john elder »

waving the white flag?? Not free, but reasonable. I noticed a post on another board using PB and out of curiosity, I clicked it up and was surprised to see I could see!

My gut reaction is still to forget it, but it was, in fact, a great pic loading site up until they started drowning us in ads and holding the pics hostage. They claim for about 20 bucks a year, you can get 10 GB hosting without ads.

It reminds me, John, of the old saw that “you can shear a sheep many times, but you can skin him only once.”

I never used photobucket but I remember clearly the gnashing of teeth and moaning their actions caused hobbyists on sites like this.

Well!
The Unmitigated Gall of that company to host peoples and businesses storage for their pictures for many years for FREE and then to have the AUDACITY to start trying to re-coop some of their monies by advertising and then to really top off the Cake to start charging people for their service. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Those DIRTBAG, SLIMEBALLS, INCONSDERATE NER-DO- WELLS. I mean really ! Next they will try and sell bottled water and charge to watch Television Shows. Woe Woe and Thrice Woe we are truly DOOMED!!!

Every business has a right to charge a fee in a capitalist economy, but every consumer has the right to no longer trust a company whose services went from free to $400 without much notice. I recall one guy saying his 165 eBay listings went dark overnight. The problem, according to NBC News (not exactly a socialist outlet) was this:

Photobucket announced last week (in July 2017) in a blog post that it was changing its terms of service. However, the post didn't mention the third-party hosting change. In order for users to find out, they would have had to have clicked the link and read the fine print. Many users didn't find out until they noticed their images were no longer showing up on their third-party pages.

That’s not a company I would trust again, but to each his own.

For about $25 per year you can get an annual domain name registration (of your choice), and annual web site hosting for your domain with unlimited space for your photos, text, pdf files blog, discussion forum or whatever else you want to put there. The photos and other files can be any size you choose. You can post photos and links to your web site here on ORCA and/or anywhere else on the world wide web. There are no ads unless you put them there. The photos and other information will be there for as long as you pay your annual twenty-five bucks for the domain registration and hosting service. If you are not satisfied with the hosting service you can shop around and find another hosting service. Your domain name will remain the same (it belongs to you now) and all of your photos and links here will still appear and work. It is a much more versatile approach and it puts you in complete control.

Steve, can you only post links to such a site or will it host images directly on a third party site? You would think it shouldn’t matter, but it’s amazing how lazy we have become and don’t want To bother (or sometimes, trust) links. Of course, we have a great hosting service on this board, so it doesn’t matter.

You can post pics here from your own website.
1. Copy and paste the URL of the photo into the window where you're preparing your post.
2. Select the pasted URL. (e.g., http://www.antiquefishingreels.info/AFR ... okOlds.jpg)
3. Click the "Img" button above.
4. Click the "Preview" button below.
5. Stand back and admire your photo.

PhotoBucket's decision is being widely seen as one of the worst in the history of internet firms, and likely will bankrupt them. No one begrudges any company for charging money for their services, but the firm claimed for a decade they made enough money from selling ads that they could host indefinitely all of their users photos. It's not the consumer's fault the company was run by morons, who in a last ditch effort to save their company tried to ransom their userbase with what by any measure was an insane amount of money for the service provided. Had they warned customers that they would have to start charging, and come out with a reasonable fee structure, I am sure there would not have been a backlash (or at least anything like there was).

I know I'll never use PB again, no matter what the circumstances are. If forced to, I'll pay a fee somewhere else before I'd ever try to go back across that burnt bridge.

I'm not very good at explaining it John, but yeah, what Steve Vernon said. Someone with your skills and volume of work could make excellent use of their own web site anyway.

"Photobucket has new management, and we are liberating your images!

As of today, your hosted images are live.

Photobucket has a new management team that wants to do the right thing. We are committed to earning back your trust and offering comprehensive and flexible image storage and hosting options for our customers. We’ve taken your feedback and made some changes to our pricing model that allows us to offer competitively priced plans that fit the needs of all of our customers.

Today, our current customers’ hosted images have been restored and Photobucket is introducing a new pricing plan that is built around everyone’s needs.

For a limited time, we are offering a new, competitive subscription package that includes ad-free storage and 3rd party image hosting for just $1.99 per month, or $19.99 per year - which is 95 percent less than the previous pricing model. A free subscription option will still be available to customers who do not require 3rd party image hosting.

In an effort to improve our customers’ experience, we’ve also moved away from an advertising-based model and have eliminated a portion of ads from the site.

Photobucket pioneered the image sharing and hosting market 15 years ago, and our new management team is committed to returning Photobucket to the premier imaging service people had come to know and trust.

There are more positive changes on the way, but for now we are excited to share this new compelling subscription option, as a testament to our dedication to you, our valued customers."

Old management did such a good job they all got canned.
