Early Pflueger Summit Clarification Needed ...

Post by reelsmith. »

I searched the archives here and found conflicting information and am looking to find out the vintage of the reel pictured below.

In one thread I came upon it was proclaimed that all Pflueger reels using Phillips head screws on the foot are post-1935.

On another I read that Summit's having only two patents dates the reel to about 1926, which is about where I think this example falls.

Yes? No?

Also, is this the earlier low amplitude wave pattern?

Thanks for the help.

Those are Reed & Prince screws, and there's a good, brief history here. Gotta be the 1930s.

Thanks Steve.

Again from the archives here, Robert Ellis said two patent dates = pre-1930.

Also found it said that the spare pawl housing (lacking on my example) appeared in 1931.

Here is a box that I have which is dated 1932 ...

Here are the papers in that box ...

Note the reel pictured on the papers is a later model than the one I am trying to date.

I've also found in the archives that the version with the marbled knobs started in 1931.

Note the picture in the thread linked below clearly shows a marbled knob reel (which came later) with slotted head screws.

Confused yet ?

I am.

Thanks Bob.

That makes sense.

Never suspected that on such a clean reel showing so little use.

lets make it simple. Your reel has no anti-backlash control which was added in 1929 and it has the second style of stamped "engraving" on the face plate. Pretty much narrows it down to 1928. The box as you observed is for a later reel.
I love to get old reels, work on them until they run as smooth as silk and the take them fishing using pre-1960 plugs, mostly surface fishing for Largemouths after dark.
