With a rod that long, he probably could cast up 40 or 50 flights of stairs.

He did make a few boastful comments on how strong his rod and reel were compared to the English tackle of the day and a competition was held.

Sadly for Mr Merrins he was comprehensively beaten, each man had to land a man swimming away from them.

I do have the result somewhere.
