In order to take out two screws, you first have to remove the drive gear attached to the axle. Looks like a design afterthought.

Yeah, you have to knock out that pin and lift the AR gear off the spindle....design shot from the hip!

Like any mechanic will tell you designers and engineers only put them together, they don't much worry about fixing the stuff, that's someone else's problem. I wonder if there is enough meat left on the slots to work, bet they were ground down after insertion. Crappy designs are patentable too.
