I recently purchased this reel because it's back plate design intrigued me. When I took the back plate off, wow was I surprised. This is a design I hadn't seen before. The drag is adjusted by turning the knob on the back plate. The design reminded me of the Kovalovsky type brake design. The click is a simple tab on the spool that would drag across the notches in the annular ring on the back plate producing a click, click, click when the spool is turned in the one direction. It's silent in the reverse direction. Anyone seen this design before?

Modifications by Charles Schrall of Minnesota.
He modified mostly EVH and Zwarg reels and later made his own.

Hey Dean, that was fast. Thank you for the info. It's always fun to learn new things about these old reels.

Yes, thanks, Dean! This was about to send me on a 10 minute search for the thread we did on this reel a short while ago! Just couldn't recall the inventor's name!

I had one of his reels once, in aluminum.
Its quite nice.
They are scarce. The modified EVH and Zwarg reels are more often seen.

This was very intresting
I think the original EVH break is great .
Can this break be so much better it worth the effort ?
Its a cool construktion anyway , does your reel work well ?
What did happend with the original backlates ?

That looked like a professional mod. Good to hear of an early reel mechanic/engineer from MN. Yet another item to ad to my research list. Been too busy offshore fishing of late to stay current. That's what winters are for.
Thanks for the share and knowledge!
