Hello ,
I am new to reel collecting and came across this Heddon Winona No.108-48 , It is in great shape and fully functional , now I was wondering how old this reel is and how is it mounted on the fishing rod ? Your help is much appreciated .

The Heddon Winona model "-48"s were sold through the catalogs from 1948 to 1962. The two models, the 105-48 and 108-48 differed only with the model 108 having a "spool encloser" as Heddon called it. It was advertised by Heddon as the perfect reel for; Steelhead, Salmon and Lake Trout, bait casting and still fishing, fly casting with live bait, trolling for bass, pike, walleyes, muskie.....you get the picture - If it swims in fresh water, the Winona is for you. Salt water anglers were the target audience for the stainless steel models 105SS (cataloged from '53 to '62) and 108SS (cataloged from '54 to '56).
The reel mounts on the side, and can take a little while to get used to casting. It should look like this on the rod:
