Thoughts on maker of this baitcaster?

Post by john elder »

Another mystery reel, at least to a couple of us. Reel is about the size of a meek #3 and seems well made except for the foot and what looks to be a Vom Hofe face plate screw, holding the grasp from the back? Any thoughts, folks??

A Winchester No.4160. Their highest grade. Nice find. These are rarely seen.

Thanks, Mark! You always come through! What do you think about the screw in the grasp? It sticks out like its supposed to catch an AR, but nothing to catch! Think the handle is right?

OOPS! Should have read description! That’s a counterbalance and correct!

Like a counter-counterbalance.

The illustration and description shown above is from my book WINCHESTER FISHING TACKLE, A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE. Since the reel in the photos is not stamped with Winchester information, it was probably sold by sporting goods dealers in a box with the ARMAX label.
If we concentrated on the really important things in life there would be a shortage of fishing tackle

I have seen this reel marked Winchester, Armax and Hendryx. It's a nice German silver reel - hard to get the foot off though.

If anyone has this model reel by Winchester or any of the other sporting goods retailers that sold it, and you need the perfectly balanced handle for it, simply post a pic here of your reel and I'll mail you my handle. I've had it for years and never found this model that didn't already have the proper handle, but someone in ORCA must need one, so let me know and we'll get 'em reunited.

Very rare reel. I paid an outrageous sum of money for a Model 4160 marked for Wilson. One of my favorite reels.
