Guessing that Ohio and New York were the two states most know for mass-production of fishing reels around 1900, I checked Wikipedia governor biographies for those states during that time period and came up empty...

Aye, there's the rub. It wasn't a competing reel.What reel would have competed for sales with Liberty’s maker?
Liberty Bell Co. made bells, some of which competed with bells made by Bevin Bros. Mfg. Co., a much older bell manufacturer also in Connecticut. Gov. Matt Bevin, Ky., became president of Bevin Bros. in 2011.
