I recently acquired a Shakespeare Omni 44 fly reel. It is a pretty cheap foreign made reel I know, but I want to use it on a 7 weight fiberglass rod for bass. The reel is almost a perfect Medalist clone.
The problem with this reel is that the spool is binding on the frame in one spot in particular and that makes the spool extremely hard to turn. The spool does not look bent and in fact the spool works fine on a different reel frame. The frame doesn't look bent or damaged but I suppose that it could have been dropped and thus damaged slightly at some point in it's life. My question is could I take my moto tool and grind down the area where it binds? I was thinking of grinding on the frame until the spool turns freely. I had rather not grind the edge of the spool.

Re: Shakespeare Fly Reel Question
Check the spindle. Eric is correct, it is probably bent.
