Any body know anything about this reel? Weird thing is that is has no end plate, end of spool just sort of hangs out there, held in by a screw cap.
Says "Baldwinsville NY .
Kilian Neo Caster
Rudolph Kilian, Baldwinsville, was granted at least 3 reel patents, beginning in 1949. He applied for a patent for a baitcaster without a tailplate in 1949, but it wasn't granted till 1954. The purpose of the design was to allow for easy spool changing.
Production probably began around 1949, because the box is labeled "Patent applied for." Some of the highlights mentioned in the package insert were:
1. "The only fresh water reel with [a star drag]." (Can this be true?)
2. "Will perform as beautifully in salt water as it does in fresh."
3. Free-spool casting in which only the spool, and not the stainless shaft, spins.
4. Anti-backlash brake.
The level wind and brake were subjects of the earlier patents.
The reels must have been reasonably successful, judging by the frequency of their appearance at shows.
