Step back 'cause I'm takin' a wild stab in the dark. The Dodge Bros and their 1896 dirt-resistant bicycle ball bearing patent, even though they weren't in Hamtramck when Horace invented it: http://www.google.com/patents/US567851 Otherwise, I give up.

Both good answers, but what I had in mind was that Hamtramck was the location (1946) of Betts & Boddeus Mfg. Co., makers of not only their famous toy derrick, but the Smooth Caster reel.
