Tip Section From Bamboo FLY Rod

Post by Jonathan P. Kring »

Badly warped tip section of a bamboo fly rod for a tomato stake? Maybe it will produce a Big One?

That must be one wimpy tomato plant. The ones I grow take 1 1/4" chainlink fence posts 4' high to keep them up. :P

Jon,
The agate guides on that rod section can sell from $10.00-20.00 each, depending on condition.

If you are interested, I can make you a good deal. I've also got about 3 more tip sections off of bamboo fly rods.

Try getting a photo of them together. I'm always looking for certain styles that I use in restorations, but there are endless varieties. The fact remains, agate guides are valuable. Take them off the section outside. Your tomatoes will never know the difference.

what kind of a fly rod has agate guides on the tip section? Every one I have ever seen has wire snake guides on the tip section and maybe on one glass lined or agate guide on the but section usually referred to as the running guide. As a kid I made ice fishing rods out of old bamboo fly rod tip sections.

It's a bit late in the year, but go down to your local ice rink and ask if they have any broken hockey sticks. During the season they usually have several every week that they have to dispose of.

These were from some old bamboo tip sections which were in a Rod case I bought at an auction at the ORCA Nationals in Frankfort ,Ky in 2013. The case belonged to casting champion Roger Herrett. Guides are on the way to Ca. (Short use as a tomato stake)

More of my stupidity. May have been used by the champion himself?

Several early makers used agate in the tip tops...usually one each...NS and agate tips.

Note....let me qualify...I have had numerous early rods with agate tip tops. As we all know, tip tops were changed out frequently, so I can't swear they left the factory that way!

J.E. I had thought about offering you those tip sections to get you to stop by for a visit on your way to NFLCC. I probably won't make it up there this year either. Too late now, maybe a free Coke?

Nice to see you've moved to Texas - everything is bigger and better there I believe.
