Ice Fishing for Channel Cats Video

Post by Bill Muth »

My wife got me a GoPro camera for my birthday back in October, this week was the first chance I had to use it. Posted a short ice fishing video on YouTube, pretty nice picture and once I got used to the editing software, it worked pretty slick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3ECDRqw-18

Bill...great video! That ice really looked thin. Any problems to and from the "hole"?

Thanks guys! Wayne, we had 5" of solid ice, no issues.. I actually saw a guy on an ATV, but I thought he was nuts.

Nicely done, Bill. I always enjoy a little ice fishing and a fish that size makes the frozen toes worth it.

Here is another one from yesterday. This one co-stars my oldest daughter, Molly, so there is a little more dialogue. Bigger fish, too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXXk3SySHKI

Right On! Always good to see Dads and Daughters out catching fish! We're about to head out ourselves and it would be nice to land a couple as nice as yours. It's going to be kind of blustery but ....not as cold!

Couple questions for you, Bill: How do you know how thick the ice is for it to be safe to venture out on and what is the piece of equipment you are using in the hole (fishfinder, I'm assuming)?

Now that is great father daughter time! You guys are tough hanging out there without some sort of shelter. Call me a coward but 5" ain't enough to support this lard butt , I like to see 7 or 8 inches out there towards the middle, especially once it gets over 4 or 5 feet deep.

Nice videos Bill. Like Ron said, looks like you're having fun with your new toy. :cool

Brian, not sure how Bill does it over there but in NE there are so many springs and one never knows when you're going to run into one that most guys test their way out with a spud bar until later in Jan/Feb and ice is consistently a foot deep or so. Clear ice is a lot stronger than milky colored ice of the same depth.

Minnesota DNR guidelines for new, clear (not white) ice:

2" or less - STAY OFF
4" - Ice fishing or other activities on foot
5" - Snowmobile or ATV
8" - 12" - Car or small pickup
12" - 15" - Medium truck

Hey Brian, in this instance the ice was pretty clear, so once I drilled a couple test holes, you could visually see ice depth where there were stress cracks or other deformities in the ice. When I am really unsure, I take an ice spud (basically a very heavy, long metal bar) and punch it into the ice to look for weakness.

The depth finder in the blue case is a Vexilar flasher. Objects under the ice show up in 3 colors, green, yellow, and red. Red means fish. Green or yellow can mean weeds, bait fish, or a larger fish that is not directly under the hole.

The air temp was 35 degrees with just a little wind, so it was pretty comfortable out there. We have a small portable sled / shelter that we take out on colder days.
