My all-time favorite is known as the "Man in the Arena" speech given by Teddy Roosevelt in 1910:

Hmmm, for decades I thought the saying used the word "seasoning". I was wrong. Apparently, in his day pickles (and other strongly seasoned foods) would be added to bland table fare in order to increase palatability, as there sometimes wasn't much variety in what was available. I imagine this was more often a winter phenomenon. We're spoiled. And luckyjohn elder wrote:"Hunger is the best pickle"
