Suggestion

Post by RAM »

Put those little plastic vials of dessicant that are in all sorts of OTC medications in your reel boxes with papers. Can't hurt, might help. Especially in my case as my man cave doesn't get AC as often as it should. Hundred dollar boxes deserve TLC!

Been doing that for years, BB. Been using those little packets, too.

Strange, I just came up with this same idea independently a few days ago but discarded it thinking, "how does one know when they have stopped working?". They don't keep absorbing water forever, they get saturated eventually, more rapidly in high humidity. Here in S Florida, in the winter when we don't run the A/C too much, the humidity can shoot up to 70-80% sometimes. I would think these little packets of silica beads would lose effectiveness rather quickly in some environments, and then you would think you had nothing to worry about when that wasn't necessarily the case.

You can bake them for reuse or just replace them occasionally. Some brands have moisture-indicating color changes.

I haven't had any issues with that yet, but then my reels are in a pretty well climate controlled environment @ 69 winter, 71 summer & 50% +- 5% relative humidity year round. I use them just as a little insurance.

I've got many of the plastic ones in tool box drawers and tackle box drawers.
