A fun project...back on the wood lathe!

Post by john elder »

warming up for some christmas projects...a golfing buddy had a clock in the family that had parted ways with 5 finials during one move or another and he wondered if I might be able to do something about that. Clock is rosewood and after checking grain, I decided cocobolo, which is in the rosewood family, looked like it might be close enough to serve.

I didn't have one to go by, so found that make clock on the 'net and did some ratios between the clock and the pic and got a good guess as to dimensions:

threw away all the bits that didn't look like finial:

Lower (stalactite version, if you will) finials were smaller and quite different

after a bit of staining to darken the lighter stripes in the cocobolo, the match turned out pretty good...duplication wasn't exactly CNC quality, but it makes a good 5-footer at least:

I love retirement!! :D

Nicely done, John. An old German clockmaker could do no better.
