Which is smartest? Cats or dogs?
Which is smartest? Cats or dogs?
The following have been eaten by dogs:
Full pair of panty hose (size not stated)
11" butcher knife
12" stick with carved point on it
A fishing lure (barbs not removed)
One pound of lead weights
A 60 watt light bulb
A full set of Christmas lights
A phone stand, including the cord
A collection of rocks (size varied)
I saw the x-rays
No cat in the history of the Earth has ever swallowed any of the above to the best of my (or most veterinarians) knowledge!

Personally i think cats know what they're doing. My mom got bit by her cat the otherday and now she's on antibiotics for a couple weeks because her hand swelled up something awful but the doctor thinks the bite may have hit a tendon so she need to go to a hand specialist this afternoon. Tell me that wasn't a carefully calcualted attack!

Good afternoon Bob:
There are some things which dogs, cats, and humans have in common. One is greater or lesser intelligence. To borrow from the wonderful author of All Creatures Great And Small, James Herriot,"All are precious in the eyes of God".
If you were to ask this question to a police officer in a canine unit, or a military person with a canine partner, or to a blind person with a seeing eye dog, or to a handicapped person with a companion dog, they would likely have a pretty clear preference.
If you were to ask folks who don't particularly like dogs, I'm quite sure that you would get a different view. And although you haven't asked me directly, I'll just say that I am fond of most all critters, but dogs...and working dogs in particular, are near and dear to my soul. And intelligence is not the most important virtue in my book. Loyalty and unqualified love are qualities most precious.
Anyway them's my thoughts.
Best wishes to you...and to your feline friend.

Actually my cat died (she was17 years old). Last of five over the years. Had dogs as a kid. Like both cats and dogs. Preferred the cats ability to handle most of their own problems over the dogs devotion and inability to handle almost anything unusual. Get plenty of devotion and problem-solving challenges from other sources.
Cheers for pets! Cheers for choice! Bad Bob

Good morning Dr. Todd, John, Bob and all interested folks:
Many good points raised here. As someone who barely made one semester in junior college, I'm at the bottom of the totem pole here. Perhaps my view is coming from a different perspective. As an analogy, there are athletes with great God given natural skill, yet many do not have the work ethic to reach their full potential.
And there are some with lesser physical attributes that excell because they use their ability to the fullest. Joe Montana was certainly the most physically gifted football player, and yet he excelled by working and studying more intently than most of his peers with greater physical attributes.
As for problem solving skills, perhaps cats are more gifted than dogs, and that's fine. What I find most admirable is the way that dogs, or people for that matter, USE their ability to the fullest. And along the way, it's nice if they also do this in a kind, loving and sharing way.
And them's my thoughts for a Saturday morning. Enjoy your weekend everyone.

As regards Joe Montana:
I flunked the proof reading class! In mentioning the attributes of one of my all time favorite 49ers, or any football player for that matter, I should have noted that Joe was NOT the most physically gifted of athletes. He is a classic example of an overachiever.
Another current example is the fine New England Patriot linebacker, Teddy Bruschi. His attitude and heart put to shame many players with far greater physical gifts.
Maybe I'm not making the greatest connection here, but whatever dogs lack in intelligence, they more than make up for in their eagerness to please their people. In this regard, I think that they set a great example for their human companions.
Enough blather. Enjoy the weekend.

Jim, you are such an honest, pleasant, and agreeable chap that you make it impossible to seriously disagree with. So... I agree with you about Joe Montana, dogs can be loveable, some cats are smart but not as smart as some dogs, and the world would be a far nicer place if everyone was the gentleman you are.
Keep smiling-but one day I will get to you! Just wait! You have a weak spot somewhere and eventually...!
