Yes, just saw that one this AM as well, Paul! Was going to alert Jim S but I'm guessing he has that one and a couple backups :D

"patent for the reel was issued October 29, 1989". I assume that is a typo.

Boy those fly reels go for as much and more than the Big Game Reels !!!! They seem like they would be much easier to make than the big lever drag reels. John Taylor

Wish I had an extra $5k lying around, as I live in the Ithaca area. All well, it's a beauty and a bargain!

Why do you think the reel, described as being German silver, is "freckling" ?

Has anyone seen this condition on a GS reel before ?

It looks more like a plated reel to me ...but then again, you can't always trust pictures.

I agree it looks like "brassing" of a nickel-plated reel, and also agree neither of us have it in hand for a proper inspection

I know of Clinton reels that are nickle silver, aluminum, and one which has a gold wash. I have never heard of any Clinton reels that were nickle plated brass. Has anyone?

This may explain it - the Clinton as advertised in the 1897 Reuben Wood's Son's Company catalog:

And the "turned wood case"

The aluminum model didn't come out until Treman, King & Co. (from Ithaca, NY) bought the rights to make the "White Hat Clinton Reel" - below:

If I'm reading the catalog listing in Jim's (thanks Jim !) post correctly, Clinton reels are nickle plated German silver.

This raises some questions ...

Why do Clinton reels not look plated ?

Maybe some/many aren't ?

Why does the reel for sale look like plated brass ?

Has anyone seen a plated German silver reel that had a "freckled" appearance ?

I'm confused.

If you click on the photo and look very closely there are areas, especially off to the left, that show as nickel plating over german silver. I'm going to suggest that the areas that are lit differently and appear to be brassing are in fact the same surface, and what appears darker and looks like brass showing through plating is actually the plating lit differently. The dark areas are the same chromed areas.
