Rick,

Two reels that would hardly have got a second look are now both mesmerizing .
All hail the "King of Shine"

Much appreciated Guys. They may not fit everyone's definition of "antique, old, vintage, nicely patina'd"...but they'll live to see another collector, somewhere down the road.

Wow !

I wouldn't even have tried cleaning those.

You've got far more patience than I.

Nice work.

Well...they're low end reels Dean. That's all I can afford to play with. :(

Marlinmate...LOL. Let's just say that...I use a method that most don't approve of. I first soak 'em anywhere from 2 hours to overnight, depending on the grime build-up. Then they get scrubbed with a toothbrush in a sink full of medium hot water with dish-washing soap (just hot enough not to burn your hands). They then get dried with a cotton towel (or rag...if you want to live). Next they get buffed whith a 6 inch bench-grinder sporting a 6 inch cotton buffing wheel. I use a medium grit jeweler's rouge applied to the cotton wheel and just buff away "carefully". Very Carefully!

Short of that method...Simichrome / a rag or two / and lots of hand polishing.

Marlinmate! Rick does a fantastic job and as he indicated, the buffer used properly is certainly no worse than most of us do using a rag and metal polish while watching TV . Concerns have mainly been expressed about getting too exuberant and rounding off corners and such...easy to do if you are as impatient as I am...clearly, Rick is at another level!

There are also those that do not believe in polishing at all and just want the reels left as found...most of us are NOT in that category unless the reel in question is over 100 years or so old...or really valuable...and there's the rub! Who decides that? It's really up to the individual. Even the most die-hard don't-clean advocates would have a hard time faulting rick's clean-up of these fairly common production reels that sorely needed the help!

Roger Schulz is in the process of putting together a book on reel cleaning and repair and Rick has been asked to prepare a chapter on his cleaning methods for inclusion in the book. He will describe how to do it right without causing irreparable harm and give some insights as to how he comes to a go-no go decision about extent of cleaning. This is going to be a great book for everyone to have, with all viewpoints given air.

The book John refers to is going to be the single most important legacy of ORCA...someday (IMHO). I can't think of a greater contribution to the collecting world than the compilation of talents, experience, knowledge, methods, tricks and cautions for cleaning and restoration, all pulled together into one concise package. There will be some GREAT contributions by some HIGHLY knowledgable folks for the generations to come. NOW...there's a true investment for the future and a legacy to be proud of.

I found this old post and got really excited at the bottom.

However, I searched other posts and didn't see any further info.

Did this book ever come to fruition?

This seem like an incredibly worthwhile project and I hope someone endeavors to complete it someday.

Reserve me a copy.

William.

Hey Rick I might have a couple of beaters like that I bought from Elder awhile back. How much do you charge for restoration? You could go into business doing that in retirement instead of being an aerospace engineer, Fantastic job. What a talent!

I' ll have to see for sure what I've got. I was really only kidding, but that would be great. What you do is alot more than spit polishing. Jon

oh yea i was going to ask what the age of this reel might be but when i opened it up on the inside of head plate were initials and 6-22-28 so im assuming it was made around that time
