Replace Old Line or Not

Post by David Lehmann »

I am finishing the cleaning of a Meis. Neptune that had nice old linen line on it. I'm tempted to replace the line when I am done, as it's pretty cool looking. But, I'm also worried that yucky things could happen under the line. I've been wrestling for hours trying to remove the green crud where the line had stuck to the reel axle previously. Thoughts? Thanks.

Hi Dave, I don't see a problem with the line as long as it hasn't been used in salt water. As far as the spool goes I find them 1 of the easiest parts of a reel to clean. I put them CAREFULLY into a multi speed drill and turn them to your hearts delite. Even with a good size spool up to and over 6", it's even easier when using a drill press so the more corrosion.......no problem. Take it down with emery cloth up to the finest. Then finishing it off with Flitz. Can't imagine how many people turn away rare pieces because of a spool? Tight Lines Nick in NY

Nick,
I never considered cleaning up spools that way--great idea. Thanks!
