Making Carbontex drag washers

Post by The Fishing Hobby »

Since there isn't an upgrade forum here, I figured I would post my technique here in case anyone is interested in making their own drag washers from Carbontex sheet stock.
Hopefully this will be useful to someone.

Great post, Kevin! Where is best place to order material? Is this the same material as used for the HT100 drags for jigmasters? Okay to use as grease drags with heavier coat?

I ordered mine from an eBay seller in Australia. I can't say that I know which is better than the others. These work well for me and some others that I read about online who had ordered from the same seller. Here is a link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252902173366
The seller does recomend the use of grease and I have seen some of the sellers tutorials online and it looks to me like he uses Cal's. I use Super Lube grease personally and blot most of it backs off. Never tried a heavy coat but the guy does in tutorials. Probably not much help, but that is all I know :D

I recommend contacting Dawn from Smoothdrag.com ...

http://smoothdrag.com-u.us

She has many precut washers available and sells half or whole sheets of thin (nonlaminated) and thick (laminated) carbontex material. Same materials as penn stock but a slightly tigher weave. I have also bought materials from the Ebay seller. I typically cut mine using an arbor press and punch kit though.

I believe this is the same people here as well (could be mistaken but this price is the same and the material looks the same): http://www.downriggershop.com.au/carbon ... shers.html

Do your punches do the inside and outside diameter at the same time? If not, how do you center the second hole to the first?

I have a cheap set that need frequent sharpening with the Dremel and only do one cut at a time. They have a centering pin that leaves a mark dead center. I punch the outside diameter first, then use the center mark to center the pin on the inner diameter. A soft plastic cutting board underneith helps here too. Many of the other AT members have had good sucess with higher end punches that will cut both ID&OD at the same time. You can use the punches with a heavy hammer to punch a few as well if you don't have an arbor (or other type of) press.

Take a look at the similar post over on AT...

For a few other ideas on cutting washers. I use the same punches and press to cut Delron washers that I put below the main gear and above the drag stack to isolate and smooth out the drag. Now replacement undergear Delron washers are available from Dawn.

I have cut some custom drag washers by hand with a sizzors/exacto/or dremel and a guide, or used a larger stock washer and sanded the OD down to fit using a drill.

That was my post too over there :D
That Mayhew gasket punch set is very nice but not in my budget!
