Cozzone I got at the silent auction in Harper's Ferry

Post by sdlehr »

Many of you have seen this reel before. It was mine after the silent auction at the ORCA national convention in Harper's Ferry. I spent a few hours this afternoon making her happy again.

Hehe, if anyone can tell me more about this reel, all I know is that it was made in Newark, NJ in the early 1900s. The library has only one Cozzone ad from 1925 which appears to show this reel in the picture. It has no drag, I would have placed it earlier, by 1925 vom Hofe was making the B-Ocean with a star drag. This reel has a Kopf clutch.

Thanks, everyone. Steve, I started my morning with coffee and Dr. Todd’s Reel News Article, which I have to go back and re-read after having seen Brian's site. Brian, I re-found your website earlier today, and it does help quite a bit. I also visited Ron's site and found that ad, which is different than the one in the library. I grew up about 30 minutes from Newark, NJ, where these reels originated. I lived in Plainfield, NJ for 7 years in the late 50's and early 60's. Still haven't found a Ralph Kolhepp reel....

I appreciate everyone's help here.

Thanks, Mike. Currently working on a Pflueger Oceanic with Williams drag (I think anything with that handle drag is cool) and a JVH HR/GS disc reel. Just had a Schoenfeld-Gutter Sea Gull Reel delivered yesterday that is waiting in the wings, but it actually just needs a light cleaning.

Very very nice job. I have a Squidder in similar condition. Uh, like the before pic I mean!!!

When you get the Oceanic cleaned up, please post it or PM me a few progress pictures. My son (10yrs) has an Oceanic apart and while a little overwhelmed at first, he perked up when he saw your finished product!
