Narrow spool reels
Would love to see some narrow spool or tournament reels. I know about the usual early Meeks, Talbots, Shakespeares, Heddons. But would like to see other companies products. Show us your narrow spool reels! Have fun. Colby

Re: Narrow spool reels
Great topic, Colby, but you immediately took me out of play with your maker restrictions! Thought I’d violate that and post some narrow spool favorites anyway :
Here’s a tough little Shakespeare Standard 2M..lots of finish loss, but what a great little reel!:

Two last cuties….Shakespeare Sportsman and a 1740:

Great reels. It's not that I don't like those great early narrow spool reels, it's just I was hoping to see some other company's products also. Thanks for taking the time to show these great reels. Let's keep them coming. How about some more narrow spool reels? Thanks. Colby
Re: Narrow spool reels
Yo Colby! Have an early 50s NS Supreme 1573 with special features used by a lure co. exec. as a tournament reel. Will take pics and send next week with details.
Cheers! Bad Bob

GREAT! Would love to see it. Come on Guys. There's got to be more narrow spool reels out there. CS
Re: Narrow spool reels
How about a little bit of classification. How narrow? Would 1-1/8" or less qualify? Would a reel need to be marked Tournament and be less than 1-1/8" width?

ps: Should jeweled bearings be added?

Just not "regular" size spool. Yes that would include all tournament reels. CS

Re: Narrow spool reels
Wanted to show this one, it's Hendryx as you can see, but that's about all I know as I don't really collect US reels
But I have always kept this one because I liked how someone made the spool shallow. The reel is not in good condition, the foot has been repaired and it is not running as smooth as it could/should, someone that has the knowledge could probably make it a lot better.
I know in the 1920's and 1930's a lot of Americans visited Europe/Belgium for casting tournaments. Bache Brown was close friends with the caster Albert Goddard from Belgium (Albert was on the cover of Brown's booklet "Spinning, more fish,... etc")
Anyway, somebody has an idea as to this little reel's age and use ?
Could it be used for tournament casting ?
It "was" a size "60" before it was customized

Re: Narrow spool reels
Not smooth at all I'm afraid... it really needs to be taken apart and lubed etcjohn elder wrote:Neat little reel, jean-Paul! How smooth does that little Hendryx run? I would think it would be quite a challenge to make a distance cast with that one!
In "line-retrieving" mode it runs rather nice, but in "freespool" it's all but free running... For now it's just sitting in my display next to some other old reels from the 1920's, it looks good but I'll probably trade it someday as it is not really my key-interest (old Belgian made fishing stuff and things related to Belgian companies, like Mitchell's with ARCA engraving etc).

Thanks Jean-Paul and John. Great little narrow spool reels.
Everyone likes the Langley Lurecast Model 330.
Keep those narrow spool reel photos coming. If I can ever figure out how to post photos I've got some to show myself.

Re: Narrow spool reels
Colby - Ocean City had a narrow spool reel , the 1825. Its a neat little tournament reel and only holds 50yds.
And here is a Montague free spool , with a black plastic spool/wood arbor. I have this reel in a wide spool also (aluminum spool), and I think the regular size as well (common spool), all are marked 100 on the foot - although they cant all be

Re: Narrow spool reels
Was wondering when a Ocean City would show up on this post? Now we have a 1825...wonderful piece of equipment. Now wait and see Cobly go nuts when someone post a Ocean City model 1950 narrow spool. Fun Hobby!

Re: Narrow spool reels
Actually I have two now...the 360 and the 360A. My "A" is missing the level wind. I'm sure someone removed it for casting competition or just to get longer casts. So now I am looking for reel to scavenge from. I think the Shorty has the same parts. By the way, I also came up with a nice Topcast, so I'm only missing a Speedcast now. "THE SEARCH NEVER ENDS"
