Field Find I'll Never Top......

Post by Jim Schottenham »

OK, some would call it an auction find, but it did take place in a field this past weekend (Friday to be exact) - in a very rural area, in Vernon, NY where a large amount of old tackle and hunting equipment was auctioned off under a tent on the front lawn. I was alerted to the sale just the day before, and after scrolling through lots of photos posted on-line by the auctioneer, I had to really study one picture in particular. It was of several reels, though there was one where I couldn't see a conventional fly reel foot, and there was a tiny shadow where there wouldn't be one if it were a standard English plate wind reel. For the rest of the day, I couldn't focus on much anything else. I got to the auction location early the next morning, and sure enough, there in a plastic bin with nine other reels was the "gem" I've been searching for.
There sat a Morgan James side-mount fly reel. Here it is:

Reel collectors might remember that the Hoagy Carmichael collection had two of the known examples sold at Bob Lang's auctions in 1999 and 2000.
Of course, I'd gladly buy another if anyone has one for sale!

Great find, Jim! You East Coasters can have your weather, but i wish a few of those auctions would wander to the Left Coast! Sounds like it was quite a party of collectors going after all that tackle and guns! I'm sure there are other stories to tell!

Thanks Everyone - and I agree with Robin - it has been a great year for ORCANs. Is it too early to ask members to show the great reels they added in 2016?
I know the year is far from over, but....
