Picked up an old carved wooden fish for $20 today at an antiques fair. Took apart an old shipping crate and applied tung oil. Attached the fish with drywall screws thru the back. Applied a quick spray of low gloss polyurethane.

Nice item and the mount makes a good contrast Mike.
Observation: If you listened carefully I suspect a groan could be heard coming from the grave of the artist who carved it when the sale closed at $20.00. Having carved some fish myself, I groaned as well. Super buy!!!

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

Re: Building a carved wood fish plaque
Thanks, guys. I think the point here is that a carved fish without a background plaque is like a painting without a nice frame--it really enhances the artist's work and adds value to mount it.
Here are two more I did this evening, as well as a smaller carved pointer I'm in the process of refinishing...it was painted a solid brown and I removed some of the paint. The base was plain white.

Nice work, Mike! I hope that's a private road! If I put that up on my drive, it would last about 48 hr before someone carted it off!

48 hours? 10 minutes here, John. But it would have gone to a good home. (Mine).
