Re: Penn display piece
Not sure about the box, but the Cheez-it's sand Capt. Morgans look familiar
This will make a wonderful display! Could imagine a nice row of Senators or Long Beaches or the jigmaster series mounted on those bars! Nice score, Doug!

Re: Penn display piece
that's really cool, and no offense, but gotta say there's something not right about a piece saying Penn with rust on it
Re: Penn display piece
I know what you mean. It's actually a very light film of rust and bare sheet metal. I'm torn on whether to have it restored or not. What would you do? Thanks Doug
Re: Penn display piece
As a matter of fact , let's have an ORCA vote. Yea's or Nea's Planned on putting my complete 1st gen penn collection on this display. Again I'm torn. Doug

Re: Penn display piece
I'd try a little marine fiberglass rubbing compound on the rusty areas & clear coat rubbing compound on the painted areas. They're both pretty mild and should do a nice job freshening up the surface. Then I'd give it a light coat of liquid wax for a protectorate and let it go at that.

Re: Penn display piece
I agree with Tom on the rust stabilization, but go very easy on any wax. I have a 120 year old minnow bucket that someone waxed, and every time I see it I wish more of the wax would rub off. I don't like the shiny old metal. Same with reels for me though, so its just preference in the end.

Re: Penn display piece
Matt is absolutely correct. Don't use any type of paste wax. They now make liquid wax in spray bottles for automobile touch ups that put a nice light luster to the surface with relatively no wax build up. I love it on painted or anodized spinning reels and external plastic parts.

Rub them down with reel oil and let it go. The next person to own it will appreciate it.

Re: Penn display piece
If you do end up putting reels on it (and I would), since the piece is from the late 50's the first-generation Sens would be from the wrong period. Their production pretty much ended with WWII.

Re: Penn display piece
I agree. It would be much more impressive if the reels and display piece were both period-correct.sdlehr wrote:If you do end up putting reels on it (and I would), since the piece is from the late 50's the first-generation Sens would be from the wrong period. More members said leave it be. That's easier for me. Is it from the 40's or 50's.

Re: Penn display piece
Very nice find. I have never seen that display stand used at a Trade Show, so I assume it was a dealer promotional item. Seems very old. Looking at the build style and type of hardware used may help date it. At any rate, that is a keeper. I would not try any restoration work on it at all. Its aged appearance falls into the "Patina" category.
mike cass,,, if you can't collect it, it must be food
