How many state name reels are there?

Post by Richard Lodge »

I have 2, a reel named Minnesota and I just acquired a neat one named Kentucky (both made by Montague). I'm not talking about a Catalina or a Neptune. And I'm not talking about a Kentucky reel made by a Kentucky reelmaker. I'm talking states! Here's mine. What do you have?

- Richard

p.s.
Here's a photo of that Kentucky reel, uncleaned. Missing one screw in the front, but a really nice little reel.

I love to get old reels, work on them until they run as smooth as silk and the take them fishing using pre-1960 plugs, mostly surface fishing for Largemouths after dark.

Very cool, Bill and Bill! California and Wyoming heard from. So that's California, Kentucky, Minnesota and Wyoming. Only 46 state name reels to go!

Montague made the following in freshwater: Kentucky #1 & #3 - Maine - Michigan (2 styles) - Minnesota (2 styles) - The Minnesota - Wisconsin - Wyoming. Shakespeare made the following: Michigan (2 styles) and the Wyoming in freshwater reels.
Now if you get into city names -----

If you have any of those, show us some photos, Don. Once we get all the states and US territories covered (Guam? Just kidding) we'll hit the city-named reels.

Richard,

Sorry to be tardy, just saw your question. There are 271 US Trademarks for fishing reels in the USTRADES database (1870-1960) and only one has a state name, although there are actually two TMs.

Alan

P.S. There are 12 TMs for reels with the names of cities, so let me know when you want to start!!

If you visit ORCA's Bronson website, you'll see that Bronson produced at least four different State reels from it's "United States" series. The Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania models.

Yes, yes, all well and good. I know I can FIND state names for reels. But I want to SEE those reels, just to enjoy the unusual variety of reels out there. And this was a way, I hoped, to goose some of youse guys to post photos of your reels.

Nikon not working well and I'm working less well! Years ago I shared pictures with Robert Ellis of US Illinois, US Indiana and US Ohio. Maybe tomorrow in the sunlight I can try again. Ohio wouldn't show up at all.

Tried again this am. If I had a dollar for every time I sent Robt. Ellis pictures and he came back and said could you do that again and try for a better picture, I'd be rich! Still not great but maybe readable? You can see flakes of Indiana snow!
