Orvis Big Game

Post by 54bullseye »

Well this won't hold a candle to the beautiful Heddon rods Mark posted back a few days ago but I just picked up this neat trolling rod. It is the first Orvis Saltwater trolling rod that I have seen. I would say it's about 30 or 50 lb. rod. it says
"Orvis Impregnated 24746" the people at Orvis say it was made December 12th 1958 and was made by Calvin Skinner and George Reed and it was sold the same year to a John Warden from St Louis Mo. Don't you wish we could find that kind of history on other Big Game rods !! Seems kind of late for building a Bamboo trolling rod as Fiberglass was around then but here it is ! John Taylor

Awesome rod and I love that Orvis not only kept records but is so willing to share.

As I learn to build split cane rods, I have a whole new appreciation for rods like this. It must have taken quite a culm of bamboo to get the big strips needed.

Very nice rod! Is that a "three-six" rod, i.e. three layers of bamboo? Is that the right term?

Sid I don't know how many layers of Bamboo there is ? I think that's referred to as "single built or double built" but I have no idea on this rod which it is and the people I talked to at Orvis didn't have that info. John Taylor
