Howe Reciprocating Reel Combo

Post by kyreels »

The post on the Hurd's catalog new to the library prompted me to add this entry. The library is free to replicate it there. One of the several Kentucky reels that I have only seen in catalogs, this one would be a welcome addition to mine (or anyone's) collection.

I'm willing to bet it came from the work done by Trabue & Howe, based on the two patents:
641906
646085

I've only ever held this one that sold through Lang's - I described it as the only known, and I've yet to see another.

Very cool photos and patents, thanks Jim. I was aware that an NFLCC collector had one (years ago now), but not that one sold through Langs. May or may not be the same one. It is rare.

Good thing I didn't get it or I would have removed the rod so it would fit in my cases. (not)

In case anyone needs to know: Howe was selling real estate before Trabue's patents were granted. He became the president of Howe Mfg. Co., brass founders and mfrs. of steam specialties. The reel co. was probably just a fictitious name, not an independent entity. Within a few years, the company no longer manufactured but acted as "machinery agents."
